It all started when an intrepid Taobao Field Reporter @drunkula linked to a Taobao shop that sold mosquitos. I usually get super excited to see freaks selling freaky things. But something wasn’t right about it. Why were they selling mosquitos? It was a clothing shop. Also, their mosquito product description was a little too fanciful to be legit.

That led me to an article which traces the origins of the mosquito craze (中文). Turns out that these shops are just trying to catch in on the tidal wave of mosquito interest.

I did some more investigation to see if anyone was actually selling real mosquitos on Taobao. If you want to get your hands on some bloodsuckers, go directly to this guy. He sells them as food for the rest of his super creepy inventory of spiders and frogs. The spiders made me tinkle in my pantaloons. But the frogs are awesome. Check this guy out:

Having a rogue mosquito loose in your room at night when you’re trying to sleep is one of the worst things ever. And they’re impossible to find – it quickly gets maddening. You would probably pay the mosquito-killing genie 1000rmb to squash that little bastard for you.

Well here is a quick and easy, non-chemical way to keep your home mosquito-free. These screens are put up with velcro stickers and a little DIY moxie. The velcro means you can also easily remove them when you want to throw some trash out the window.

When you buy a window screen kit like this one, be sure to add some extra velcro to your order. That stuff comes in handy. You can stick it to your TV remote, or on the back of your mobile phone to keep it from slipping out of your pocket.
